A basic staple for all the women in my family is lip balm. My mama has to have her lipstick around at all times. She’s so good at applying it that she doesn’t even have to look in a mirror anymore! I have lip balms stashed all over my house, from my night table, to my office desk, to the bowl with onions and garlic in the kitchen, to every purse I own. The girls are fascinated with lip balm and are always thrilled with new ones even if they’re only barely different from the ones they already have.
It’s a problem.

Recently, in trying to simplify my life, I thought about the things I use most often on my body, and this was the top of list. Like many of y’all, I use lip balm more than lotion, shampoo, or even make-up in general. The brutal summer months will find me slathering this on while out working in the yard, and the chilly winter months chap and dry out my lips so this is vital to living. After doing a little research and testing, I developed this simple recipe that works all year round. The ingredients are all natural, wholesome, and super moisturizing for your gorgeous face.
Great for Kids and Beginners
This DIY Everyday Lip Balm recipe is also great for kids ages about 3+ and without bee allergies, as it does include beeswax. Of course, check with your child’s doctor for a definitive opinion. This recipe is also a great beginner one to dip your toe into DIY bath and body products. I was kind of nervous about buying these things for the first time, honestly. I was a little worried that I would mess them up, or never use them, or get the wrong thing, but it is WAY easier than I thought. I included affiliate links in this post so you could click and see exactly what I used to make what you see pictured here. Maybe best of all, making your own takes your price of one tube down to less than $1 each, which just makes my thrifty little heart soooo happy!
Time
- 10-15 process
- 10-15 cooling
Tools
- Medium metal saucepan
- Metal measuring spoons
- Plastic measuring spoons will not be your friend here. Metal will be so much easier to clean as the ingredients are really rich. They do not have to be expensive, though, and can be the ones you use for cooking as long as you get food grade butters and waxes (which you should do for your mouth anyway).
- Glass measuring cup with a spout and handle
- Similarly, you want to go with glass here so it is heat safe and easy to clean. The handle makes it easier to grab when it’s hot, and the spout makes it easier to pour into your vessel.
- Wooden or metal stirrer of your choice
- Lip balm tubes
- You have several options for lip balm vessels. You can go with the basic tube type, a bigger size, plastic-free tubes, or little tubs. Really, the choice of vessel is up to you and how you like to apply your lip balm. Just remember that you might have to adjust how much you make, but the ratio is a super easy 1:1:1 one, so it’s totally easy to change quantities.
Ingredients
- 1 tsp shea butter
- 1 tsp coconut oil
- 1 tsp beeswax
- 1/2 tsp vitamin E oil or 1 capsule
- Optional: food-grade essential oil(s) in flavors/scents you prefer
Process
- Add about an inch of water to your saucepan and put it over medium heat.
- While your water heats up, add all your ingredients to your measuring cup. If you use a capsule of vitamin E like I did, just puncture it with a knife and squeeze it into your cup. If you add essential oils, I would adjust the number of drops to your preference.
- Let everything slowly melt in your cup. Don’t let the water boil around your cup; if it gets too hot in there, just cut the heat down a bit.
- Once it is all melted, pour your mixture into your tubes or tubs, making sure you are careful and using a potholder when touching the measuring cup. If your mixture gets all hardened up, you can definitely put it back in the water and melt it down again.

Let your DIY Everyday Lip Balm totally cool before you swipe them on. What scents will you use in yours? When you do find yourself wanting more lip balm, or are you a year-round offender like me?
