Holiday Stovetop Simmer


  • Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot


  • 3 cups water
  • 1 navel orange
  • 1 cup fresh cranberries
  • 1 sprig fresh sage (or 4 leaves)
  • 1 sprig rosemary Optional: you can substitute 1 teaspoon of dried rosemary.
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole allspice berries Optional: you can substitute 1/2 teaspoon of ground allspice.
  • 1/2 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • 2 whole star anise


  • Add the water to your heavy-bottomed pot and set it over low heat on the stovetop.
  • Slice your navel orange into fairly even slices as thick as you prefer.
  • Add all ingredients to the pot.
  • Simmer your potpourri over low heat for as long as you prefer. Make sure to keep an eye on the water level, and if it looks low to you, just add more water.
  • Once you are finished, turn off the heat and allow your simmer to thoroughly cool before straining off the water and discarding the liquid and solids in the manner you prefer.
